Stinky Athletic Gear

January 7, 2020 by chris@merrittandco.com

The drive home after a long day of sport’s competition, be it football, basketball, volleyball or lacrosse, can be tough for the passengers that did not play. You know that smell… the one that requires all the stinky athletic gear to be in the trunk, or truck bed, or hanging out the window, just to allow the other passengers to breathe! The smell that you can’t get out of the shoes, socks, knee pads or jersey, no matter how hard you try.

There HAS to be a Product

After six years as a volleyball mom, and trying to wash the smell out of EVERYTHING, and still being able to smell that stink…. I finally found a product that actually works! Rockin’ Green’s Active Wear detergent does the trick. I was skeptical at first, but I was also desperate! As my second daughter started to become very serious about volleyball and now plays almost year round (along with her older sister), I was willing to try anything to help the smell.

How exciting to find something that WORKS!

Trying It

The first thing I wanted to do was to soak everything in the detergent in the bathtub. I have seen some pictures of other’s gear as it soaked in the tub, and I really didn’t believe what the water looked like. As I put all of my daughters freshly washed volleyball gear into the tub with warm water and detergent, I took pictures to prove the amount of crud that came out. Remember, these clothes have just been washed!

Disgusting. That is all there is to say. The first picture proves that the water is clean when the detergent is added.

Then, I added all the freshly washed clothes. This includes volleyball spandex, socks, sports bras, practice shirts and knee pads. The stinky athletic gear soaked for an hour in warm water with the detergent as directed on the package. After soaking, there is no need for a rinse, just put all your stinky athletic gear in the washer and don’t add anymore detergent. Just wash as normal.

The smell is gone! Incredible! I now wash all the athletic clothes using Rockin’ Greens Active Wear and nothing else!

I also carry Norwex Sportzyme with me to all the tournaments because after the game, and before the stinky athletic gear can be washed, you can spray the shoes, knee pads and anything else with it, and it will breakdown the enzymes that are stinking! Check out more information about Sportzyme here.

Ohhhh that is so gross! Fortunately I don;t have a kid in sports anymore but I fully understand the stink. My daughter played softball from the age of 6 through high school. The smell of sunscreen, ball park dirt and sweat is STILL in my senses. 🙂 This Rockin Green detergent looks like a god send.
